UFC president Dana White and Strikeforce lightweight contender Jorge Masvidal seem to have differing ideas on the future of Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez.
White revealed over the weekend that, as part of the UFC’s ongoing campaign to cherry-pick the best fighters on Strikeforce’s roster, Melendez will be heading to the UFC “a.s.a.p.,” possibly before his scheduled title defense against Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal. For his part though, Masvidal seems sure that his fight with Melendez is still intact and that El Niño will be sticking around in Strikeforce at least until that fight goes down.
As he tells MMAWeekly.com: “I called my partner Dan Lambert (from American Top Team) and he was the one that told me, let me get into it. So, he went and found out that people had just taken it out of context, the fight was still on. They want Gilbert in the UFC bad, but our fight’s still going to happen.”
Masvidal revealed that he’s even signed a bout agreement, seemingly locking the fight down.
“The fight’s on,” Masvidal said. “From what me and my camp understand, the bout’s still on. I just signed bout agreements like two weeks ago.”

UPDATE: In response to this video, Gilbert Melendez said simply, “Sounds good to me.”
