Melvin Guillard is a student at Jackson’s MMA in New Mexico, but that didn’t keep him from branching out to Florida’s Imperial Athletics to prepare for Joe Lauzon.
Guillard and Lauzon meet this coming Saturday at UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard III from Houston. The bout is slated for the main card, which will be available on pay-per-view.
Guillard and Rashad Evans became close friends while coming up on The Ultimate Fighter together, continuing their friendship under Greg Jackson’s training. After Evans split from the camp, Guillard remained in close contact with “Suga” and decided to seek him out for his latest training.
“I know a lot of people look at it like, ‘How are you at Jackson’s and you train with Rashad?’ Well, Rashad’s been like a brother to me since (The Ultimate Fighter),” said Guillard, in an interview with Sherdog.com recently. “Jon (Jones)…he’s my boy, he’s my teammate. I stay out of their beef, and I keep myself neutral to everything. For everybody that don’t know, that’s what it is. I still love Rashad like a brother, and I love Jon like a teammate. There are gonna be times when I’m gonna go to Imperial, and I’m probably gonna train there again.”
Guillard (29-8-2) has put himself in prime position to become a challenger for the UFC 155-pound title by winning five straight fights and eight of his last nine overall. During his recent streak, Guillard has stopped three of his opponents by strikes.
Lauzon (20-6) has alternated wins and losses since 2010, going 2-2. He defeated Curt Walburton in his last fight by submission in June.
