Many believe Demetrious Johnson would be a perfect contender for the soon-to-be-here UFC flyweight division. But, “Mighty Mouse” says he will stick around bantamweight for the time being.
Johnson lost to Dominick Cruz for the UFC title Saturday night in the main event of UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson. Despite going five rounds with the champion, Johnson (9-2) was unable to inflict much damage on Cruz (19-1).
“I’m focused more at 135,” Johnson said. “I know I lost, but I’m happy where I’m at, and I still think I can be champion at 135. I’m going to go home and fix a lot of things and keep climbing back to the top of that mountain.”
Johnson had won four straight fights, including wins over the likes of Miquel Torres and “Kid” Yamamoto, but the size and strength of Cruz was too much.
“I was really surprised how strong he was, honestly,” Johnson said. “He used a lot of leverage to hold me down. I was trying to get back to my feet, back to the striking department. He showed why he’s the champ. I don’t see him losing for a long time.”
