UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson went down from the Verizon Center in Washington D.C. tonight and offered a card full of exciting fights from top to bottom. As always, the superlative fighters of the evening were awarded bonuses for their efforts, this time in the amount of $65,000.
Tonight’s fight night bonuses were given to Anthony Johnson (Knockout of the Night), Stefan Struve (Submission of the Night), as well as Matt Wiman and Mac Danzig (Fight of the Night).
Though some protested an early stoppage by referee Mario Yamasaki, there’s no question that Anthony Johnson was putting the hurt on Charlie Brenneman. Rumble denied Brenneman’s takedowns and made him pay for it; he had The Spaniard reeling in short order thanks to a grazing head kick and some ground and pound and he finally dropped him with another, picture-perfect head kick to earn the Knockout of the Night check.
Stefan Struve rebounded from a knockout loss to Travis Browne by submitting highly-touted kickboxer Pat Barry in two rounds. Struve hung with Barry on the feet for the majority before dragging him to the mat. Struve slapped on the triangle and survived a highlight-reel slam to tighten the choke and finish the fight, taking home Submission of the Night honors in the process.
Finally, Matt Wiman and Mac Danzig were given the Fight of the Night bonus for their entertaining, back-and-forth rematch. The two lightweights engaged in an absolute barnburner; both men had moments of success and threatened to finish, but both made it to the final bell, scrapping away the whole time. In the end, Wiman was awarded the unanimous decision over Danzig.
