Stefan “Skyscraper” Struve rebounded from his first-round knockout to Travis Browne tonight by submitting kickboxing expert Pat “HD” Barry in the second round of their UFC Live 6 co-main event bout.
The two men showed each other a ton of respect in the first round, taking their time to feel the other out before committing too much to any offense. Struve hung well with Barry on the feet, using his reach advantage to keep Barry at bay and off-rhythm. The first frame was closely contested throughout though, with Barry getting in his share of decent shots as well.
Barry started to hit a groove in the second round, showing impressively technical defense and putting together impressive combinations on the feet. Barry repeatedly attacked Struve’s legs, following with hard counters that more than once stung the towering Dutchman. After tangling with Barry in the stand-up world for the majority of the fight, Struve took advantage of his massive height advantage and cranked down on Barry, dragging him to the mat and threatening with a choke. From guard, the 23-year-old slapped on a tight triangle in short order. In a move that would make Rampage smile, Barry lifted Struve high into the air and slammed him onto the mat.
Unfortunately for Barry, Struve had practiced good defense to that slam, rolled with the impact and tightened the hold; Barry was forced to tap shortly after.
Struve improves to 21-5 as a professional with the win and gets back in the win column following a tough knockout loss. Barry falls to 6-4 in defeat and now finds himself on a two-fight losing streak.
