Hendo’s back in the UFC and he’s making no bones about his plans: he wants to make a run for the title.
With 185lbs. kingpin Anderson Silva currently on the sidelines injured, Henderson has his sights set on UFC light heavyweight champ Jon “Bones” Jones. Before he can get close to that goal though, Hendo must first defeat his fellow Pride FC veteran, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. The two are set to do battle on November 19 in the main event of UFC 139 in a fight that UFC president Dana White hints could set up the next contender to the UFC light heavyweight throne.
“The UFC light heavyweight division is arguably the deepest division in the sport and Dan Henderson and ‘Shogun’ are fighting to prove that they deserve to be next in line for a shot at the title,” said White. “Both of these guys want to earn the right to be called the best 205lbs. fighter in the sport. These guys both have incredible power and I expect a great fight on Nov. 19.”
Dan Henderson acknowledges that this bout is fan-service to the hardcore MMA fan, nostalgic for the Pride era, but believes that it will an exciting tilt which will appeal to every kind of fight fan.
“This is a fight that the hardcore and old-school Pride fans have been waiting for,” Henderson said. “Shogun is a tough opponent and this is a fight that I’m excited about. The fans are in for an explosive bout.”
UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson will take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
