UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones turned down movie star Steven Seagal’s request to enter his pre-UFC 135 preparations in an interview on the Jim Rome Show earlier this week.
Jones, who went on to defeat Quinton “Rampage” Jackson via fourth round submission, said he didn’t know how Seagal received his phone number to even get in contact with him. “Bones” mentioned why he turned down a man who has trained with the likes of Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida.
“Machida is definitely someone I want to fight in my near future and I just didn’t want to share my psychology with him or anything that would put me at a disadvantage in the future,” Jones said. “It was just confusing, really, to bring in someone you don’t work with at all to give you last-second advice, it can actually be more detrimental than helpful.”
However, had it been a different movie star that had reached out to Jones, his answer may have not been the same.
“I definitely wasn’t having Steven Seagal in my corner,” Jones said. “I could see if it was Jet Li or something. Jet Li would be pretty cool. I would definitely take that call, for sure.”
Jones’ next title defense will come against former training partner Rashad Evans. No date or venue for the fight has been announced.
