Dominick Cruz minted his status as UFC bantamweight champion with his July defeat of Urijah Faber, technically his third defense of the title which originated in the WEC and carried over when the UFC absorbed that promotion.
This weekend at UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson, The Dominator will attempt to make his fourth title defense against Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, the bantamweight division’s resident whirling dervish. The fight promises to be a non-stop battle that will have to be replayed in slow-motion to catch all of the action. Cruz is well on his way to becoming another dominant UFC champion; he’s already defeated most of the top name fighters in the bantamweight division and is looking to run through the rest before possibly testing himself at featherweight.
He and UFC president Dana White spoke about his upcoming fight and his goal to run roughshod through the 135lbs. weight class.
“Dominick Cruz has been on a tear in the bantamweight division and he just beat Urijah Faber in an incredible fight,” said White. “He’s on a mission to run through the division.”
Cruz won’t deny that he’s looking to wipe all of the division’s contenders out, but he’s currently keeping his eyes on Mighty Mouse, a tricky competitor who will very likely give him a run for his money this Saturday night.
“I have a lot of goals for myself and I’d be lying if I said cleaning out the division wasn’t one of them,” said Cruz. “It’s a goal because it’s such a hard thing to accomplish. Demetrious has a lot of heart and you can tell he’s a hard worker. He’s the next opponent I’ll need to beat in order to achieve my goal. I’m excited to get to D.C., where half of my team is located, and put on a great show for the fans.”
UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson goes down this Saturday night from the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.; don’t forget to check back on FightLine that night for our live, ongoing coverage of the event.
