Tony Ferguson found success in his first post-TUF fight, earning a TKO over wily veteran Aaron Riley last Saturday night at UFC 135: Jones vs. Jackson.
El Cucuy displayed the kind of powerful, crisp striking and athleticism which carried him to win The Ultimate Fighter 13, ending the fight between the first and second rounds by breaking Riley’s jaw in the first frame. Ferguson was disappointed in the way that the fight ended, but impressed even himself with his display of power.
“I’ve done damage before but never a broken jaw,” said Ferguson post-fight.
Though Ferguson won TUF 13 as a welterweight, he’s dropped back down to lightweight for his post-TUF career. He was annoyed at having to watch his diet and cut more weight initially after making the drop, but has found the division to be a good fit where he feels hungry and truly competitive.
“I didn’t like it at first because I like my cakes and pies at 170,” he said. “But I feel great at this weight.”
Ferguson would liked to have shown more of his overall skill set on Saturday night, but is ultimately just happy to have gotten a win after The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale.
“I’m happy, but I didn’t get a chance to show you everything I’ve got,” said Ferguson. “But, I’m still excited about this win.”
The 27-year-old improved to 12-2 with his victory over Riley; things will just get tougher for the TUF alum from here on out though, as the waters just get deeper the more you progress at 155.
