UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson goes down on October 1 at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.; today, the UFC held a conference call to promote that fight featuring UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and challenger Demetrious Johnson. Heavyweight co-main eventers Pat Barry and Stefan Struve are also on the call.

Notes and Quotes

-“My career is bigger than just beating Faber,” says Cruz.

-Cruz says he and Johnson respect each other as fighters, but that you’ll see them throw down come fight night.

-Johnson looking forward to putting on a great show for the UFC and the fans, showing the world what he’s got.

-“It feels like I’m back in the WEC a lot.” – Cruz on the level of media responsibility for a live-on-TV card sandwiched between two pay-per-view fights.

-Johnson gave up working full-time when he got the call to face Cruz for the title; this is the first time in his career where he’s been able to put in a full camp with regular rest.

-Cruz: Range nullifies speed.

-Pat Barry says he’s used to fighting taller guys and Struve is used to fighting smaller guys, so this fight won’t be anything that either of them haven’t seen.

-Struve: I think if I use my reach the right way, it’ll be a big advantage for me.

-Cruz says, “Reach is a big deal, if you know how to use it. A tall fighter needs to know how to fight like a tall fighter, a short fighter needs to know how to fight like a short fighter. … I definitely believe that reach is a big advantage.”

-Barry has been training with “Black Struve,” Maurice Green – he’s 6’9″. Sometimes Marty Morgan would stand on a stool to help Barry train.

-Johnson looking to fight at flyweight and bantamweight whenever the UFC institutes the 125lbs. division.

-Cruz open to fighting at featherweight and meeting Jose Aldo, but he has his mind on Demetrious Johnson right now.

-Barry says he’s living the dream despite career ups and downs, he’s always wanted to be a ninja and now he gets to make a living doing it.

-Hype or Die learned from losing to Cheick Kongo that anything really can happen in a fight and that you can never make everyone happy.

-Jon Jones and Anderson Silva have the “Mike Tyson effect” on opponents; someone needs to get in the ring who’s not afraid of them. – Barry

-Struve on Jon Jones: He showed real skill over the weekend, thinks possibly a very solid submission fighter might be able to give him a run for his money. Thinks Rashad Evans is quicker than Jones and could give him problems.

-Cruz on Jon Jones: He’s showing what it takes to be champion. He keeps the fight unpredictable at all times, keeps his opponents guessing to great effect. The person to beat Jon Jones will have great striking fundamentals and the ability to put him on his back. Putting Jones on his back may be the only way to beat him.

-Barry and Cruz have a brief discourse on how to beat Jon Jones; Barry still wonders what will happen when Jones gets hit in the face.

-Johnson on Jon Jones: “I think it’s his time now, I think it’s his era.”
