UFC President Dana White has said he hopes that Spike TV will not try to counter-programs on the FOX Network next year when the UFC begins its partnership with the television giant.
Well, White can probably forget about that, as Spike TV announced they will counter UFC on FOX 1 with fights involving Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos. Velasquez-Dos Santos is the scheduled main event for UFC on FOX, with the UFC heavyweight title on the line.
Spike TV will show three hours worth of fights involving the two fighters, along with several other big names in the UFC including Jon Jones, Matt Serra and Mark Munoz.
Bellator will also be broadcasting Bellator 57 on MTV2 prior to the Spike TV special.
Spike TV’s Dos Santos vs. Velasquez: Unleashed will begin with Jones vs. Ryan Bader, dos Santos vs. Shane Carwin and Velasquez vs. Brock Lesnar.
The second hour features dos Santos-Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Tyson Griffin-Hermes Franca and Thiago Silva-Keith Jardine. The final hours features Velasquez-Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira, Serra-Frank Trigg, Pat Barry-Antoni Hardonk and Munoz-Kendall Grove.
Spike TV will be able to show past UFC events throughout 2012 as long as they don’t sign to televise any new MMA programming. White has said the UFC will not buy back the library which Spike owns, but it is possible that FOX will purchase it to keep from any counter-programming taking away viewers.
UFC on FOX 1 takes place on November 12. The hour-long telecast will have a full prelim card which will be used to fill the special if the heavyweight title fight ends early.
