Rashad Evans has his sights set on fighting for the UFC 205-pound title against either current champion Jon Jones or Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, who face off this Saturday in the main event of UFC 135.
Evans is the No. 1 contender in the division, meaning he will likely receive a title shot – pending any serious injury to the victor – in early 2012.
But, the next contender on the list will be determined in November, when a returning Dan Henderson tackles Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 139.
“It would be tough not to give the winner of that fight the next shot after Rashad (Evans)…Rashad’s next,” UFC President Dana White said at a pre-UFC 135 press conference Wednesday.
Henderson (28-8) was the Strikeforce 205-pound champion when his contract expired with the promotion. He signed back with the UFC earlier this week, accepting a bout with Rua for the November 19 card.
Rua (20-5) lost the UFC title to Jones earlier this year after defeating Lyoto Machida for the title in 2010.
