UFC President Dana White announced on his Twitter account Wednesday that an injury has forced Vitor Belfort out of a planned fight with Cung Le at UFC 139 in November.
White did name a new opponent for Le, as the former Strikeforce middleweight champion will now face Wanderlei Silva at the event.
“Vitor is injured and out of San Jose fight. Now Cung Le will fight Wandy!” White wrote.
UFC 139 takes place November 19 from San Jose, California. A main event pitting Dan Henderson against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is slated for the event.
Le (7-1) had been pushing to fight on the card, as he currently trains in San Jose and has helped draw major crowds to past events held in the city during 2009 and 2010. This will be the first time “The Human Highlight Reel” has fought since defeating Scott Smith in 2010 in San Jose, avenging the lone loss on his professional record.
Silva (31-11-1) last competed in July, falling to Chris Leben by knockout in just 27 seconds. “The Axe Murderer” is 1-3 in his last four bouts, and just 2-6 in his last eight.
Belfort took to his own Twitter account to report that he hopes to be back in December, as the injury is nothing serious.
“I am out of November card, I have to take care of a injury. Nothing major but the good news that the doctor says I will be ready for Dec.,” Belfort wrote.
