By earning a first-round knockout victory over Jake Shields last night at UFC Fight Night 25, Jake Ellenberger placed himself firmly in the middle of the UFC welterweight title picture — a position he’s comfortable occupying.
Speaking post-fight (props to MMAJunkie.com for the presser quotes), Ellenberger addressed the fact that he likely isn’t too far away from challenging for a title shot and that he feels confident in his chances against either of the two men currently on deck to contest the title: Georges St-Pierre and Carlos Condit, the latter of which handed him a controversial loss in his octagon debut.
“I think I match-up well with Carlos and GSP,” Ellenberger said. “I’ve gotten a lot better since [Condit and I] fought.”
Though he feels himself ready for the title shot, Ellenberger explained that he’s in no rush: he’s happy to keep fighting until he earns the shot without a doubt.
“Whoever the UFC asks me, I’ll fight,” Ellenberger said. “I’ll keep working my way up until I get my title shot.”
UFC Fight Night 25 went down last night at the Ernest N. Morial Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.
