Mauricio “Shogun” Rua delivered a crushing knockout of Forrest Griffin at UFC: Rio last month.
Now, while talking with RedeTV Esporte recently, Rua discussed the final blows that finished the fight.
“When he was laid out on his back I heard him scream, ‘Stop, stop!’ but I couldn’t stop hitting him,” Rua said.
“Shogun” finished the fight in the first round, avenging a submission loss he suffered to his fellow former UFC light heavyweight champion.
Rua (20-5) did praise Griffin for showing heart and conditioning. Griffin’s mind was surely in other places that night, as his wife had gone into labor just hours before the fight with their first child.
“But I wanted to win badly,” Rua said. “I trained so much and promised to myself that I would never come to perform in a fight 90 or 80-percent like previously. This is my focus today.”
The win got Rua back on track following a loss that cost him the UFC title to Jon Jones in March. Many have speculated that a third meeting between “Shogun” and Lyoto Machida could take place before the end of the year to help clear up the 205-pound division.
