Overeem On Bout With Lesnar: “This Fight Is Not Going To Go The Distance”

A fight between Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar has been speculated over since the two men simultaneously ruled the heavyweight divisions of Strikeforce and the UFC, respectively.

The idea of the two behemoths actually squaring off has stoked fan discussion for years now, but (and maybe because of that speculation, which raised the bout to a near-mythological status) even when the UFC’s parent company, Zuffa, LLC, purchased Strikeforce, the match-up seemed destined never to happen. Between Lesnar’s recurring health issues and Overeem’s tendency to wander about fight promotions — not to mention the fact that he got released in the middle of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix — it just didn’t seem to be in the cards.

Well, then the UFC announced that they had signed Overeem and that his first fight would come against a returning Brock Lesnar. Go figure.

Overeem spoke about the fight, which is going to go down as a five-round, non-title fight this December, with Shoot Media.

“My team is very excited,” said The Reem. “Everyone I’ve spoken to is excited about his. You have two big guys — Brock is a very big guy, very dangerous guy. I’m happy. I’m happy we came to this agreement, I’m excited to fight Brock and I’m very excited to be in the UFC promotion.”

As far as what he expects from the fight, Overeem doesn’t see two men who possess the kind of power which they do fighting for five rounds without someone getting taken out.

“I’m going to do what I do best. I expect him to do what he does best. This fight is not going to go the distance, that’s one thing for certain,” he predicted. “Someone is going to get beat up. I’m going to do my best to make sure it’s not me.”

UFC 141 will take place on December 30 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Check out Overeem’s video interview below.
