Aaron Simpson announced on his website that he has a new opponent for UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard lll, as Eric Schaefer has replaced Nick Catone.
Catone was forced out of the planned bout due to an injury suffered in training. Catone (9-2) tore his Achilles while running sprints.
Simpson (10-2) and Schaefer (12-5-2) are expected to be part of the preliminary card.
“Well guys I have my new opponent for UFC 136 and I am pumped for the challenge!” Simpson wrote on his site. “I am excited about this opportunity and look forward to a very tough challenge. Eric is a big guy who is cutting down to 185 from his normal weight class at 205 where he fought Ryan Bader. He has a very tough ground game and I will have to be at the top of my game to beat him which is why I am so excited for this challenge.”
Schaefer is making his third stint in the UFC, where he is 3-4 all-time. Recently, “Red” picked up a submission victory over Chris Albandia at XFO 41 to improve to 5-2 in his last seven fights.
Simpson, a two-time NCAA All-American wrestler, has gone 5-2 in his UFC career, including back-to-back wins over Brad Tavares and Mario Miranda.
