When Nick Diaz was booted from his UFC 137 main event against UFC welterweight champ Nick Diaz for failing to hold up his end of the pre-fight media obligations, Carlos Condit was brought in as a replacement.
Condit will now fight St-Pierre for the UFC welterweight championship on October 29, the same night that he was originally scheduled to face former champ BJ Penn. Though fighting for the title will be a lifelong dream realized for Condit, he would still like to make good on his fight against The Prodigy, whom he pegs as one of the legends of this young sport.
“Nah, this title shot has been what I’ve wanted since I started fighting and I would still like to fight BJ,” Condit told SBNation when asked if he would have rather fought Penn before he challenged for the title. “He’s a legend in the sport. I’ve looked up to him for a very long time and that would be a win that I would want on my record. For now, I’ve got to capitalize on this moment and go hard and see if I could get this belt.”
Penn kept his spot on the fight card despite Condit being called up for a title fight and he will take on his friend and sometimes training partner Nick Diaz at the event.
UFC 137: St-Pierre vs. Condit takes place on October 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
