Following his stunning knockout win over Brendan Schaub at UFC 134, Antonio Rodrigo Nogeuira called for a fight against either Frank Mir or Brock Lesnar, in Toronto or Japan.
Lesnar got matched up with former Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem, but Big Nog still had his wish granted: He is slated to face off against Frank Mir at UFC 140 in Toronto.
The bout will be a rematch of a 2008 meeting, which saw Mir knock Nogueira out for the first time in his storied career. Shortly after the bout, it was revealed by Nogueira’s camp that he had been battling a severe Staph infection during the lead-up to the fight and wasn’t able to get into the kind of shape he normally would for a fight.
Team Nogueira boxing coach Luiz Carlos Dorea believes that this rematch will yield an entirely different result from their UFC 98 meeting as a result of Big Nog being healthy and in-shape for the fight.
“Now the history will be different,” Dorea posted to Twitter (props to FightersOnly.com for the translation). “Now Mir will face a Rodrigo [who is] 100 per cent fit and hungry for the win!!! Rodrigo is going to win.”
UFC 140 will take place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on December 10.
