UFC 135 just took a significant hit.
UFC president Dana White revealed today through his Twitter account that UFC 135 co-main eventer Diego Sanchez has been forced out of his welterweight tilt with UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes after breaking his hand in training.
“Diego Sanchez broke his hand. Looking for a replacement for Hughes,” posted White.
Sanchez and Hughes were to square off right before UFC lightweight champion Jonny “Bones” Jones attempts to make the first defense of his belt against former champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
Since rejoining the ranks under Greg Jackson in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the 29-year-old Sanchez has won two straight contests, over Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann, both of which earned Fight of the Night honors. The middleweight winner of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, Sanchez has gone on to post a promotional record of 12-4, with his only losses coming against Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, BJ Penn and John Hathaway.
No news yet on who will step in against former multiple-time welterweight champion Matt Hughes.
UFC 135 is scheduled to take place on September 24 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado.
