Jake Shields, who’s father recently passed away, has decided he will still meet Jake Ellenberger in the planned main event of UFC Fight Night: Shields vs. Ellenberger.
Jack Shields, who also served as Jake’s manager, died in his sleep August 29.
“He will fight,” Cesar Gracie, Jake’s trainer, said in an interview with MMAWeekly.com.
Shields (26-5) lost for the first time since 2004 earlier this year when he fell to Georges St-Pierre in a bout for the UFC welterweight title. The loss snapped a 15-fight win streak for Shields.
“Lost my father, manager, one of my best friends today! R.I.P. Jack, you will be greatly missed and loved by many,” Shields wrote on his team’s Gracie Fighter website last Tuesday.
UFC Fight Night: Shields vs. Ellenberger takes place September 17 from New Orleans, Louisiana. Along with the Shields-Ellenberger fight, the main card will feature Court McGee meeting Dongi Yang, Jonathan Brookins facing Erik Koch and Alan Belcher taking on Jason MacDonald.
