Today, the long-rumored bout between BJ Penn and Carlos Condit was made official for UFC 137 this fall. BJ Penn filmed himself signing the contract and posted the video to his personal website, BJPenn.com.
Once a champion in both the UFC lightweight and welterweight divisions, Penn (16-7-2) has settled back in at welterweight after losing his title to Frankie Edgar and failing to recapture it in a rematch. In his first fight back north at 170lbs., Penn knocked out former rival Matt Hughes in twenty-one seconds in their rubber match. Following that fight and in his most recent outing, Penn met perennial number two welterweight Jon Fitch at UFC 127, where the two fought to a majority draw. That fight was likely to be a welterweight title eliminator and this fight against Condit is rumored to be the same.
After running into some turbulence upon initially transferring from the WEC — where he reigned as welterweight champ — Condit found his groove in the Octagon and has rattled off three very impressive finishes, over Rory MacDonald, Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun Kim — all of whom highly-regarded welterweight prospects. Those three performances netted the 27-year-old Fight of the Night and two Knockout of the Night bonuses and have vaulted him into contendership in the welterweight division.
UFC 137 is scheduled to take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 29. Check out the video of Penn signing the contract below.
