Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira wasn’t the only MMA veteran who scored a big win over the weekend to experience resurgence. Though on a smaller stage and against a less-heralded opponent, Andrei Arlovski scored a win on Saturday night to snap a four-fight losing streak.
Arlovski met 5-3 Ray Lopez at ProElite: Arlovski vs. Lopez on Saturday night at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, in a bout that saw him survive a few harrowing moments early on to score a third round TKO over his opponent.
The Pitbull spoke with Sherdog.com about the win.
“I feel like I did the first step right now, I start to re-build my MMA career,” said the Belarusian. “Thank you Ray for taking this fight. I’m really excited, I’m very happy and I feel great.”
Prior to the win over Lopez, Arlovski had gone winless since 2009, with three of those defeats coming via first round knockout. The 32-year-old believes in his coaches and sees this win as his first on the road back to becoming champion.
“After four losses in a row, two and a half years… [All of my trainers] did a great job and I really appreciate all the people who still believe in me, who were sure I’m not done,” said Arlovski. “I’m sure I’m not done and I will be champion again.”
Arlovski will need to face off against tougher competition to really generate hype around a comeback and he’ll need to answer the still-lingering questions about the durability of his chin as well.
