Rousimar Palhares defeated Dan Miller at UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami Saturday night, but, if you ask Palhares he could claim two victories over Miller.
Palhares dropped Miller with a devastating punch in the opening round, and followed with a string of punches on the ground. Referee Herb Dean ran in to check on Miller, and Palhares jumped to his feet and began celebrating.
The only problem was Dean hadn’t called the fight.
Upon the restart, Miller dropped Palhares, but in the end, Palhares pulled out the decision.
“He said, ‘Stop, stop, stop’ so I stopped,” Palhares said of Dean. “I thought the fight was over so I jumped onto the top of the cage.”
In reviewing the action, Dean never raised his hands or tried to step in, and it looked as if the veteran ref said nothing to Palhares.
The crowd in Rio was deafening, especially for Palhares. It is possible someone was yelling to stop the fight, but, regardless, Palhares was happy to get the win.
“God is on my side,” Palhares said. “So I can win once, twice, three times.”
This marks the second straight win over Palhares, and his fifth victory in six fights. Since 2008, he has lost only to Nate Marquardt and Dan Henderson.
