Brendan Schaub isn’t getting totally ahead of himself heading into Saturday’s bout with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
But, “The Hybrid” is thinking about future opponents should he win his fifth straight fight at UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami.
Speaking with MMAFighting.com, Schaub (8-1) has his sights set on the ultimate prize in MMA: the UFC heavyweight title.
“They could give me the winner of Cain (Velasquez)-(Junior) dos Santos and I don’t think many people would argue about it,” Schaub said. “Or you could give me a big name like (Brock) Lesnar.”
Those are some pretty big remarks by the 28-year-old Ultimate Fighter runner-up.
Schaub currently owns a knockout victory over Mirko Cro Cop to his resume, and a win over “Minotauro” in his home country would vault him up the heavyweight rankings.
Velasquez-dos Santos meet later this year, and a future No. 1 contender has not been announced yet. Frank Mir is also awaiting a new opponent after toppling Roy Nelson, and word is that Lesnar will be back around the first of the year.
Schaub could be facing Nogueira at the perfect time, as the bout will be a feature event on the pay-per-view, and no other heavyweight has made a strong case to receive a title shot. This will also be “Big Nog’s” first fight since early in 2010, when he lost to Velasquez by knockout.
UFC 134 goes down Saturday night at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Don’t forget to check back on FightLine.com that night for our live, ongoing coverage of the event.
