Despite earlier rumors that UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva was being considered for the main event of the promotion’s debut on FOX, UFC president Dana White today told MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani that The Spider will not be appearing on the show — regardless of how he performs this weekend against Yushin Okami.
“It’s not true,” White said of the Silva-on-FOX rumors. “I saw that rumor too; yesterday I was cruising around on the Internet and saw that it’s not true. If he goes out and wins in 13 seconds, he’s not considered for the FOX show.”
Silva was rumored to be facing Chael Sonnen (provided Sonnen get past Stann this October) or Dan Henderson in a rematch for the show and, though White shot those possibilities down, he revealed that the events which transpire at UFC 134 on Saturday night will directly impact the matchmaking process for the UFC’s network debut.
“I’m working on it right now,” White said when asked what the main event would be. “I can’t (say anything about it). You know me, I have to get the deal done and I have to know that both guys are going to accept the fight. Plus, saying that, even though I say that (Silva) won’t fight on the FOX card, I’m watching what happens this weekend before I decide who’s going to fight on FOX.”
