Though the UFC has not yet succeeded in legalizing mixed martial arts in New York, the promotion keeps its presence in the city streets.
It was announced today that the two live, SpikeTV-aired preliminary card bouts for this weekend’s UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami fight card will be shown on a large digital screen above the Doubletree Hotel in the Little Brazil section of Times Square.
The two bouts to be shown will feature Brazilian lightweight Thiago Tavares taking on fellow 155’er Spencer Fisher and middleweights Rousimar Palhares and Dan Miller squaring off and will begin airing at 8 p.m. EST, with the broadcast slated to run until 9 p.m. EST.
This will mark the first time that the UFC has aired a live fight in Times Square and the promotion is hoping that the broadcast will draw interest from city-goers, who will fill the local bars in search of the main card on pay-per-view.
UFC 134 is to take place this Saturday night from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and will feature a middleweight title fight between champion Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami. This will mark the first time since 1998 that the UFC has taken its show to Brazil.
