Two words written by Jon Fitch were all it took: “I’m back!”
Fitch, a welterweight contender, posted on his Twitter account that his doctor has cleared him to begin training once again following a shoulder injury that knocked him out a rematch with B.J. Penn.
“Dr. Kavitne gave me the OK to fight,” Fitch wrote.”
Fitch (23-3-1) and Penn were slated to meet at UFC 132 in a rematch of their draw from UFC 127. It was reported that a win by either fighter in either match up would have more than likely led to a shot at Georges St-Pierre.
GSP, the current welterweight champion who faces Nick Diaz later this year, holds wins over Fitch and Penn.
The former Purdue University standout has not lost since that meeting with St-Pierre in 2008. He had four straight wins before the draw with Penn.
A possible match for Fitch is Johny Hendricks for UFC 139, though neither side would confirm talks.
