Rick Story was well on his way to solidifying his status as a top contender in the UFC’s welterweight division until he ran into Charlie Brenneman.
Story stepped up on short notice to replace an injured Anthony Johnson against Nate Marquardt at UFC on Versus 4 in what would have been Marquardt’s debut as a 170-pounder. When Marquardt was forced out of the fight at the last minute for registering elevated testosterone levels on his pre-fight medicals, Charlie Brenneman — whose opponent for the card also got injured and pulled out — was brought up to face off against Story.
Brenneman made the most of things and took Story out via unanimous decision, robbing him off the momentum he gained by putting together a six-fight winning streak in the UFC culminating in a big win over Thiago Alves.
Story is ready to get back on the horse though and recently told MMAJunkie.com what and who he has in mind for his return.
“Dong Hyun Kim,” he stated as the opponent he wants to face next.
“I think it will solidify that the last fight was kind of a fluke, and it would [rebuild] some of that lost momentum,” he added.
Story revealed that he is looking to return to action this fall.
“I’d like to do it at UFC 139 on Nov. 19,” he said.
UFC on Versus 4 went down on June 26 at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
