Chael Sonnen is known as much for his mouth as his fighting prowess, but he hasn’t found a bad word yet to say about his next opponent, Brian Stann.
Though the former real estate agent can usually dredge up an insult or left-handed compliment about most anyone, he hasn’t so much as attempted to smack talk Stann. Whether he could come up with something clever to say about the All-American or not (he could), Sonnen won’t. He has too much respect for the former U.S. Marine Corps Captain.
“Brian Stann’s a great guy, I like him very much,” he said during a recent appearance on Fight Day with Dave Farra.
The two middleweights are expected to face off at UFC 136 this fall in Texas, with the inner likely to receive a shot at the victor of the upcoming title fight between champion Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami. Sonnen sees his bout with Stann as a matter of pure competition and feels no need to carry no animosity with him to the cage.
“Listen, fight’s just a word. I’m not going out to fight with Brian Stann, I’m going out to compete with him,” he said. “I’m gonna bring my skills, he’ll bring his skills, we’ll shake his hands and live with the result either way.”
UFC 136 goes down on October 8 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas and will feature two title fights: a lightweight championship tilt between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, as well as a featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Kenny Florian.
