MMAFighting.com reports that UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez’s surgically repaired shoulder has fared well in workouts, and the champion is on track to defend the title against top contender Junior Dos Santos at UFC 139 on November 19th from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA.
Velasquez underwent shoulder surgery to mend an injury he suffered in winning the belt from Brock Lesnar at UFC 121 last October. The American Kickboxing Academy-trained heavyweight partially tore his right rotator cuff in the bout.
Number one contender dos Santos further proved his rightful place as the next challenger to the title after dominating the heavy-handed Shane Carwin over three rounds at UFC 131 in June. Dos Santos was met in the cage by the champion after the fight, with Velasquez stating that he was “excited” to face dos Santos.
“Much respect for Cain Velasquez, but I’m coming for you,” dos Santos said to Velasquez after the bout.
“He showed awesome standup like he does in all his fights,” Velasquez noted. “He’s the No.1 contender. I’m excited to fight someone like this.”
While not officially announced by the organization, UFC 139: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos is expected to take place on November 19, 2011 from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
