UFC President Dana White today revealed that Fedor Emelianenko has been cut by Strikeforce.
“He’s being cut, yeah,” said White, following today’s UFC 133 pre-fight press conference. “Why? Do you think we should keep him?”
The release was expected after “The Last Emperor’s” last three fights ended in his defeat. For the first time in his storied career, Emelianenko has not only been defeated emphatically, but it’s happened three times in a row.
Staunchly opposed to the idea that Fedor is now, or ever was, the greatest mixed martial arts fighter to have ever competed, White used Emelianenko’s recent defeats to remind the media of his thoughts of the stoic warrior.
“You guys thought he was the pound-for-pound best in the world, but I thought he was overrated for years,” White said.
This past Saturday at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Fedor took home his third consecutive loss courtesy of fellow PRIDE vet Dan Henderson, who took him out in the first round of their heated scrap via TKO.
The devout Christian stopped short of saying for sure whether or not he’ll return to action — as he’s leaving the decision in God’s hands — but one thing is for sure: the Russian’s notoriously difficult management team will have less leverage than usual during negotiations as a result of The Last Emperor’s current losing streak.
