Versus will be getting a new name in time for 2012, as it becomes the NBC Sports Network, according to reports.
The name change will coincide with NBC’s broadcast of the NHL Winter Classic and the run-up to NBC’s February telecast of Super Bowl XLVI.
The change will take effect on Jan. 2.
Versus is set to broadcast two more UFC cards before the end of the year.
UFC on Versus 5 is scheduled for Aug. 14 and will feature a main event pitting Dan Hardy against Chris Lytle, while UFC on Versus 6 is set for Oct. 1 and will showcase bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz defending against Demetrious Johnson.
“Our goal is for anyone who sees the name or logo of one of our assets to immediately connect with NBC Sports,” NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus said.
NBC’s other sports channels will not be part of the rebranding, as the Golf Channel will remain the same. Also, the regional sports networks will keep their Comcast SportsNet names, and any further change to those names is unknown at this time.
The NBC Sports Group will be updating the logo, making its peacock larger and using new fonts for NBC Sports.
First usage of the changes will be broadcast during the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers game from Citizens Bank Park on Jan. 2 for the Winter Classic.
“These rebranding efforts are a major step toward a complete strategic alignment of all our platforms and businesses,” Lazarus said.
