Bellator announced today that its season four lightweight tournament winner, Michael Chandler, will face off against promotional lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez this October at Bellator 54.
Alvarez, who is currently on a seven-fight winning streak which includes victories over Josh Neer, Roger Huerta and Pat Curran, last appeared in action at Bellator 39 in April, where he defeated Bellator season two lightweight tournament winner Pat Curran via unanimous decision. The 27-year-old Pennsylvania native sports an overall record of 22-2, his only losses having come against Nick Thompson and Shinya Aoki.
In the official release for the event, Alvarez had this to say of his opponent: “I watched the [Season 4] lightweight tournament very closely and was really impressed with a lot of the competition. Knowing that Chandler is my opponent, I’ve already gone back and started to watch film, and I’ll be ready. He brings a really good pace, and it’s going to be a great fight.”
Undefeated in eight professional bouts, Michael Chandler earned his shot at Alvarez by defeating Marcin Held, Lloyd Woodard, and Patricky Freire to win Bellator’s season four lightweight tournament. The 25-year-old trains out of Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas and believes that he’ll be able to make Alvarez wilt with constant pressure.
“Eddie is obviously a world class lightweight, but in a lot of the fights I have watched, no one has really pushed the pace against him,” said The Brute. “I want to put him on his heels and make him respond to what I’m doing in the cage. I’ve got a few months to prepare, and I’ll be more than ready for Oct. 15.”
Bellator 54 is scheduled to go down this October 15 at the Boardwalk Hall Ballroom in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
