Brazilian heavyweight powerhouse Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva announced today through his Twitter account that he has officially joined Team Nogueira, home to several of the sport’s Brazilian luminaries.
“Guys now I represent @TeamNogueiraRio I’m very happy with my new team..great heavy weight @junior_cigano @RAFAEL__FEIJAO @Minotauromma,” Bigfoot posted.
In the past, Silva has had club ties to the Wolfslair MMA Academy in Widnes, UK, Brazilian Top Team, and American Top Team. For his most recent bout, which came against Fedor Emelianenko this past February and resulted in a TKO win for Bigfoot, Silva trained with the crew at Imperial Athletics in Boca Raton, Florida.
On Team Nogueira, Silva will be joining forces with MMA standouts like UFC middleweight champion and top pound-for-pound fighter Anderson Silva, the Nogueira brothers, UFC light heavyweight fighter Fabio Maldonado, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, current number one UFC heavyweight contender Junior dos Santos and former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante.
The 31-year-old fighter will next appear in action opposite former US Olympic freestyle wrestler Daniel Cormier in the semi-finals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix this September 10 at Strikeforce 36.
Having defeated Emelianenko to advance, Silva was expecting to face Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem in the tournament’s next round, but Overeem pulled out of the tournament due to injury-related scheduling conflicts, bringing in tournament alternate Daniel Cormier as a replacement.
