Undefeated Swedish welterweight Papy Abedi faces a tough challenge in his UFC debut. The organization announced that Abedi will face former top welterweight contender Thiago Alves at UFC 138 in November.
“Undefeated welterweight Papy ‘Makambo’ Abedi has agreed to make his UFC debut against fan favorite Thiago ‘Pit Bull’ Alves at UFC 138,” said UFC President Dana White.
Abedi currently holds an 8-0 record, with all but one of his victories coming via knockout or submission. He last fought at Superior Challenge 6: Lion’s Den last October, submitting Nathan Schouteren with a guillotine choke in the first round.
Alves (18–8) has been less-than-stellar since facing Georges St-Pierre for the UFC welterweight championship at UFC 100 in 2009. The powerful welterweight is 1-3 in his last four bouts, most recently losing to Rick Story via unanimous decision at UFC 130 last May.
UFC 138: Leben vs. Munoz takes place on November 5, 2011 from the LG Arena in Birmingham, England. The event will be aired via tape delay on Spike TV.
