With his back against the wall, Brandon “The Truth” Vera will be facing off against fellow light heavyweight Eliot Marshall this fall at UFC 137.
The UFC has announced that the bout will join an increasingly star-studded card, which will be topped by a very intriguing welterweight title fight between UFC champ Georges St-Pierre and former Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz.
Having garnered heaping praise and generated great expectations during the first half of his career (Vera went 8-0 with seven finishes), Brandon Vera’s career path changed once he fought Tim Sylvia for the heavyweight title and lost. Since then, the 33-year-old has gone 3-5 with one No Contest. He was cut by the UFC after suffering three losses in a row — to Randy Couture, Jon Jones and Thiago Silva — but was welcomed back to the promotion when it was learned that Silva had faked his urine test for fear of testing positive for PEDs and the bout’s result was overturned to a No Contest.
Vera’s job will likely be on the line for his second fight in a row, but he has been granted a shot at redemption.
To attain that, however, he’ll have to get past The Ultimate Fighter 8 cast member Eliot Marshall. Defeated on that season by Ryan Bader, Marshall has since compiled a 10-3 record, with a UFC promotional mark of 3-2. “The Fire” was cut from the promotion following a split decision loss to Vladimir Matyushenko, but welcomed back after a successful three-fight stint in smaller promotions. In his promotional return, Marshall was defeated by Luiz Cane via first round TKO.
UFC 137 goes down this October 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
