Former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans will be watching the light heavyweight championship fight between champion Jon Jones and challenger Quinton “Rampage” Jackson with great interest. Should Evans defeat Tito Ortiz at UFC 133 on August 6th, he will meet the winner of the UFC 135 main event next.
Evans has faced Jackson before, defeating Rampage at UFC 114 via unanimous decision on May 29, 2010. Evans’ hasn’t fought since, while Jackson has gone on to defeat both Lyoto Machida and Matt Hamill via unanimous decision. Nonetheless, Evans predicted that his former partner-turned-rival will walk away from the fight with his hand raised.
“I think it’s going to be Jon Jones,” Evans told MMAWeekly Radio last week when asked to predict a winner. “I would like to see Rampage catch him with something, but I honestly believe Rampage is not doing what he needs to do, and he’s not going to do what he needs to do to win the title.
“He’s just been living off of fumes of his Pride days, and he really needs to go and take things seriously,” he continued. “If he took things seriously, I think he might be able to do something, but he ain’t trying to take nothing serious.”
UFC 135: Jones vs. Rampage takes place on September 24, 2011 from the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado.
