The UFC confirmed that the rumored bout between BJ Penn and Carlos Condit will take place at UFC 137 in October.
Penn and Condit have continued the growing trend of fighters setting up their matches via Twitter, as the two welterweights recently took to Twitter to try and get the bout made.
“The people have spoken,” Condit posted to Penn’s attention. “They want to see us scrap. Let’s give ’em what they asked for.”
“The Prodigy” was quick to accept the challenge.
“Yup,” Penn wrote. “Let’s do it! October 29th.”
While the match up is certainly an intriguing one, it leaves Jon Fitch — who fought Penn to a draw earlier this year and was expected to rematch the Hawaiian former champion — in the lurch. After posting several messages from his fans expressing varying degrees of disappointment with the proposed Penn-Condit fight, Fitch addressed Penn directly.
“@bjpenndotcom you broke my heart, I thought you were a man of principle,” he wrote.
Penn offered his defense: “@jonfitchdotnet tried to make it happen but Joe Silva said “the fans don’t want it & I’m not interested”. Not much more I can do on my end”
UFC 137: St-Pierre vs. Diaz takes place on October 29 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
