After the rubber match between UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and challenger Gray Maynard fell through at UFC 130 due to injuries suffered by both participants, the UFC announced today that the championship fight will finally take place at UFC 136 in October.
After capturing the lightweight belt from MMA legend BJ Penn and then defeating him again in an immediate rematch, Edgar wanted the chance to erase the only loss on his record, which came to Gray Maynard back in 2008. It just so happened that Maynard was poised as the UFC’s top lightweight contender, so the rematch was made.
Many expected the fight to be a measured grind, but it ended up being one of the most exciting title fights in UFC history. Edgar survived a first frame onslaught from Maynard which had the referee threatening to call the bout, only to come back and do what many believed was enough to win the fight; the judges however, scored the bout a draw.
UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard III will take place on October 8, 2011, at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
