UFC Officially Announces Roy Nelson Vs. Mirko Cro Cop

With the loser likely to receive their pink slip, The UFC officially announced that Pride FC legend Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic will be facing The Ultimate Fighter 10 winner Roy Nelson this October in a heavyweight tilt at the still-materializing UFC 137 fight card in October.

A legend of the now-defunct Pride Fighting Championships, 36-year-old Croatian fighter Mirko Filipovic has lost his last two fights, both via knockout. After stringing together two wins in the promotion over Anthony Perosh and Pat Barry, “Cro Cop” ran into Frank Mir at UFC 119 and was KOed with a knee in the final round of their three-round, lackluster fight. Filipovic wouldn’t get an easy return either, as he took on surging young gun Brendan Schaub next at UFC 128 and was also knocked out in the third round. The former Croatian parliamentarian sports an overall record of 27-9-2; he’s gone 2-3 in his last five trips to the Octagon.

Roy “Big Country” Nelson took the TUF 10 crown with a first round knockout over Brendan Schaub and built some momentum in his next outing with a knockout over “The Skyscraper,” Stefan Struve. Then he met current number one contender Junior dos Santos at UFC 117 and “Cigano” handed him one of the most one-sided defeats in his career. The 35-year-old squared off against fellow Las Vegas native Frank Mir his next time out; he took home his second unanimous decision loss in a row as a result. Nelson is 15-6 overall and 2-4 in his last six.

Nelson and Filipovic will meet at UFC 137, which is to take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada and will feature a main event between UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre and former Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz.
