UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar has won over the hearts of a legion of fans through his continued shows of heart, grit and determination.
He defeated BJ Penn twice when he wasn’t even supposed to last the distance against “The Prodigy” and hung tough and fought to a draw against Gray Maynard after suffering a beating in the first round which would have caused most men to quit on the stool.
Still, “The Answer” faces critics and disbelievers.
Rising lightweight contender Melvin Guillard recently appeared on FightLine.com’s official radio show, Pro MMA Radio, where he asserted that the New Jersey champ is overrated.
“I feel like a lot of the guys at the top of the heap were overrated. The UFC will promote them harder so they’ll get more of the attention… Me personally, I think Frankie Edgar is overrated. He beat BJ Penn twice, I’ll give the guy credit where credit is due, but he barely got away from Gray Maynard. He’s the champ right now, but he’s not a finisher. To me, a lot of the guys who aren’t finishing fights are overrated. Nowadays you get a lot of bad judging, so who’s to say these guys really won some of these fights they say they won. I just feel overall that best 155’er and I’m content with that.”
Guillard is currently riding a five-fight winning streak, having finished three of those five bouts.
