As noted moments ago, a report on MMAFighting.com stated that Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming fight with Rashad Evans at UFC 133 next month due to a knee injury.
In a follow-up article on the site, UFC President Dana White stated that Tito Ortiz was asked to fill in for Davis on short notice against Evans, but declined.
“Tito turned it down,” White told MMA Fighting.
White went on to state that the organization would offer the fight to Lyoto Machida, and they expect to announce the new main event for the card very shortly. The co-main event of the card currently features former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin facing veteran Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
Evans is familiar with both Ortiz and Machida. The only blemishes on Evans’ MMA record are a draw to Ortiz at UFC 73 in July of 2007, and a loss to Machida at UFC 98 in May of 2009, which resulted in Evans losing the UFC light-heavyweight title.
UFC 133 will take place on August 6, 2011 from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
