Phil Davis “Confident” Wherever Fight With Rashad Evans Goes

Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis will have the biggest fight of his young MMA career this August when he meets former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans in a title eliminator bout.

Davis — a Penn State standout from Harrisburg, PA — discussed what he thinks it will be like to face off against “Suga” in front of a hometown crowd at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

“I’m definitely glad to be back in Pennsylvania for the biggest fight of my life,” Davis said. “It’s going to be good to be able to fight in front of all my family and friends. I feel like I can take this fight wherever I want. I can wrestle with Rashad, I can strike with him, and I feel confident wherever this fight goes. Rashad Evans is the most dangerous opponent I’ve ever faced, but I don’t think for a minute that I’m outmatched. I’m going to take care of this fight and do whatever I have to do to beat Rashad.”

Former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans hasn’t fought since becoming the number one contender to the light heavyweight title by defeating Quinton “Rampage” Jackson by unanimous decision at UFC 114 in May of 2010. Evans decided to bide his time and allow then-champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua to recover from knee surgery. Following an unfortunate sparring incident incurred while preparing for the planned title shot, Evans gave his blessing for younger training partner Jon Jones to step up and fight for the light heavyweight championship in his stead, who dominated Shogun en route to winning the title via third round TKO. On August 6, the 31-year-old hopes a win will put him in line for a shot against former teammate Jones.

“My road back to the title continues in Philadelphia against Phil Davis and I expect this to be one of the best fights of the year,” Evans recently stated. “Phil is on the rise in this sport and it’s my job to put an end to that. He’s a former national champion wrestler and he’s been impressive thus far in the UFC, but my experience in big fights gives me the edge. I want another shot at the belt and I’ve got to beat Phil to earn it.”

UFC 133: Evans vs. Davis will take place on August 6, 2011 from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
