With previous Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz having vacated his title in order to test himself and earn a paycheck by facing off against UFC champ Georges St-Pierre, Strikeforce now has a vacant belt to assign.
Currently, the plan is to establish two top contenders who will face off for the belt in Diaz’s absence and we will likely know who at least one of those contenders is come July 30. Scott Coker recently revealed to MMAJunkie.com that the winner of the Tyron Woodley-Paul Daley welterweight match up — which is slated to go down at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson — will likely fight for the title in their next bout.
“I would say the winner of that fight we’re definitely keeping our eye on,” Coker said of Daley-Woodley. “I think by the end of the year, you’ll see a title fight happening.”
As for who the victor will face, Coker would say only that it will likely be a newly-acquisitioned fighter who boasts the kind of experience that would qualify him for an immediate shot at the vacant belt.
“We’re about to sign another fighter that until it’s done I don’t want to say who it is,” Coker said. “It’s possible (the new fighter could immediately fight for a title). Maybe we’ll give him one fight, and we’ll see what happens. But I definitely think the experience will speak for itself.”
Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson will go down at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
