SpikeTV Source On UFC Negotiations: “They Want Their Own Channel”

Though the actual relationship between the two parties has remained amicable, negotiation tactics between Dana White/the UFC and Spike TV have gotten pretty dirty.

Spike initiated the proceedings, counter-programming the recently aired UFC on Versus 4 live broadcast with a block of UFC-related programming which actually beat out the live card in ratings. Speaking with recently, White addressed Spike TV’s latest play and admitted that he understands where they’re coming from.

“I see Spike’s side,” White said. “That’s what I would do too, and you guys know I would do that.”

MMAFighting also spoke with an anonymous source inside Spike TV who briefly discussed things from their side.

Pointing out that it’s “pretty obvious why we’re doing what we’re doing,” the source explained simply that, “We’re all just doing our jobs.”

The UFC has benefited greatly from the exposure they’ve gained as a result of their broadcast relationship with Spike, but are rumored to be working toward purchasing the G4 network and converting it to an all-UFC channel.

“They want their own channel, and this is an opportunity for their own channel,” said MMAFighting’s source.

As for whether or not White and company plan on retaliating against Spike, White would say only, “We’ll see… I owe you one Spike.”
