Former UFC heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida vaulted himself back into the title picture by earning a spectacular second round Crane kick knockout over revered veteran Randy Couture.
Most believe that another impressive victory for “The Dragon” could establish the karateka as the number one contender at 205lbs. Thanks to the aggressive campaigning of returning middleweight Chael Sonnen, Machida may have his next fight already lined up.
“I don’t know what the future holds,” Sonnen said recently in an interview with MMAFighting.com. “There’s plenty of guys out there to fight. There’s a Karate guy at 205lbs. I might stop there on my way back to 185lbs. for a tune-up fight and take out [Lyoto] Machida, but we’ll see, we’ll see where it goes.”
Machida was recently asked his thoughts on a fight with Sonnen in an interview with Tatame.com, and the elusive Brazilian asserted that it’s a bout he would gladly accept.
“I think that’s great, I’m excited to do that,” said Machida. “He’s coming back now, wants to fight, and I really think it’s a good fight for me. If Sonnen really wants this fight, I’ll sign it immediately, no problem at all.”
Sonnen last appeared in action at UFC 117 in August of 2010 in a losing effort against Machida’s teammate Anderson Silva. He was subsequently suspended for the improper disclosure of his testosterone replacement therapy and then suspended again for inconsistent statements he made during that hearing.
