Following his impressive and dominant unanimous decision victory over Shane Carwin earlier this month, Junior dos Santos was again granted the status of number one UFC heavyweight contender — a position that his boxing coach, Luis Carlos Dorea, recently told Tatame.com is one which his pupil is more than ready for.
“He’s a good guy to test him,” Dorea said of UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. “‘Cigano’ is much more mature, doing fine, working really hard. Everything we’ve planned tactically to do we put in action on the fights and got great results. He’s shown he’s much more mature now. He still is a really aggressive and smart guy. Fighting three rounds is a way to learn more. He’s much more mature after that.
“The bouts against Roy Nelson and Shane Carwin added a lot to his career. Now he’s much more mature as an athlete and has all the skills to become the next UFC champion. People that helped him are to be congratulated, it was a real good job. ‘Cigano’ is an athlete who’s ready to become a UFC champion. He has never had an easy bout, fought the best and now he deserves a chance at the belt. That’s his dream, that’s my dream, and we’re going for it. We’re going to become champions, if God blesses us.”
There has been no official date given to the Velasquez vs. dos Santos title fight, but it is rumored to be taking place at UFC 138 this November 19.
