Matt Mitrione will step into the cage for only his fifth professional fight as he faces Christian Morecraft this Sunday at UFC on Versus 4. Mitrione spoke to ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas to discuss the fight, and also took time to speak about his fellow heavyweights.
Mitrione was critical of former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Shane Carwin and his conditioning. Mitrione feels that Carwin still has “a lot to learn,” but is on his way.
“I think Carwin is a good guy, but I think Carwin has a lot he has to learn, especially about his explosiveness now,” said The Ultimate Fighter 10 alum. “Gassing is a huge thing to a heavyweight. For it to happen the first time in a major fight (against Brock Lesnar), I think it might have played a little bit of mind games for Carwin. I think it’s very serious. Gassing is a big damn deal.”
Mitrione said that he observed Carwin gassing again, this time against Junior dos Santos at UFC 131 earlier this month.
“I heard he said between the first [and second], ‘my legs are dead’. I think that’s another sign of the adrenaline dump. Adrenaline dump is a bitch and once it sets in it really plays mind games with you,” said Mitrione. “He has a couple more fights to gets used to it. It can really make or break you.”
Mitrione also talked about former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and where he ranks, you can watch the full interview below:
