Yushin Okami is the last man to have defeated UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, though he did so via disqualification after he was knocked out by one of “The Spider’s” potent up-kicks, an illegal move in the promotion where they met.
Okami himself has said that he doesn’t count the fight as a victory and, now preparing to face Silva again for his title at UFC 134, is looking to erase what he considers a loss from his record by being the first man to take out “The Spider” in the UFC. Speaking with Brazilian news source O Globo (props to ESPN UK), Okami discussed his impending bout with the man many consider to be the best mixed martial artist on the planet.
“I don’t like that fight being down as a victory of mine but I had lessons there and I want to use everything,” Okami said of his and Silva’s first meeting.
“I hope that now we will have a real end. I know he is a complete fighter and has no weak points. But, if I use all my technique, power and speed, I will smash Anderson Silva. Of course I promise I will defeat Anderson. I will use all what I learned in life to accomplish this objective. I know Brazil is one of the great countries in MMA. I insist, it’s an honor to be able to face him here.”
Silva and Okami are set to meet at the UFC’s return to Brazil, which will come on August 27 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
